Septian “Deki” Andriki had spent thirteen years looking for this moment. A former elementary school physical education teacher turned self-taught rafflesia hunter, Andriki had chased tips, false leads, and half-remembered sightings across the Indonesian archipelago since 2012, all in pursuit of a single elusive species: Rafflesia hasseltii<\/em>, a parasitic, leafless flower that can grow larger than a dinner plate and had not been confirmed in the wild for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The break came from an unlikely source \u2014 a tip passed along by a local resident earlier in the year, which eventually routed Andriki, together with Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) researcher Joko Ridho Witono, into a nearly day-long trek through dense, tiger-inhabited rainforest in Sijunjung Regency. When the team finally reached the site and found a hasseltii<\/em> bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals, Andriki could barely speak. “After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later said. “I just cried.” A ranger accompanying the group, he recalled, thought he had been possessed by forest spirits; Thorogood, watching the outpouring, said he felt like “the luckiest guy alive.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The footage \u2014 a grown man collapsing in tears before a flower \u2014 went viral within days, translated and reposted across Indonesian, British, and American outlets alike. But behind the viral moment was a serious scientific milestone. Rafflesia hasseltii<\/em> is one of roughly 42 recognized species in the genus Rafflesia<\/em>, a family of bizarre, chlorophyll-less parasites found only in the rainforests of Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei. Lacking leaves, stems, or roots of their own, rafflesias live almost invisibly inside the tissue of host vines for years, revealing themselves only in the rare days when they burst into bloom \u2014 flowers that can span nearly a meter across and emit an odor of rotting meat to attract carrion flies for pollination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That combination of rarity, unpredictability, and sheer biological strangeness makes rafflesias a kind of holy grail for field botanists. It also makes them almost impossible to protect. Researchers estimate that roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii<\/em> populations grow outside any legally protected forest, leaving them exposed to logging, land conversion, and disturbance with no formal safeguard standing in the way. The 2025 rediscovery \u2014 part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford and involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines \u2014 was as much a conservation flare as a taxonomic triumph. The team has been collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map how the genus’s many species relate to one another, hoping that understanding the plant’s genetics might finally explain why it blooms so rarely, and so unpredictably, in the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Sumatran rediscovery captured global headlines, but it is only the most photogenic example of a far larger, far quieter enterprise: the ongoing, unglamorous work of finding, describing, and naming the plants that share the planet with us \u2014 many of them for the first time, and some of them possibly for the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, that work happens on an almost industrial scale. Garden scientists discover and formally describe roughly 200 new plant species every year \u2014 a figure the institution says accounts for about one in every ten new plant species named anywhere in the world annually. In 2025 alone, the Garden highlighted ten standout discoveries from its list, ranging from a Costa Rican cactus to a new member of the daisy family in Peru and a species honoring the 200th anniversary of Bolivian independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the year’s more improbable finds involved patience measured in decades rather than months. Around twenty years ago, tropical entomologist William Haber handed a cutting from an unusual-looking cactus to Barry Hammel, then a curator at the Garden, suspecting it might be distinct from the common moonlight cactus species already known to science. Hammel kept the cutting \u2014 now long since retired from the Garden himself \u2014 and waited. It was not until the plant finally flowered in his own Costa Rican yard that he could confirm what Haber had suspected: a new species in the moonlight cactus genus Selenicereus<\/em>, believed likely to be endangered. Elsewhere in the Garden’s 2025 tally, researchers described Mimusops sahakensis<\/em>, an endangered member of the sapodilla family found growing on stabilized sand dunes along Madagascar’s eastern coast \u2014 known from only two sites, both threatened by charcoal production \u2014 and a new persimmon relative, Diospyros schatzii<\/em>, named for a late Garden botanist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History runs a parallel operation. Its Department of Botany reported that in 2025 its scientists discovered, described, and formally published nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus, along with dozens of taxonomic reclassifications. Botanist Laurence Dorr alone published four new species in the mallow family, including one known only from the Wassarai Mountains of southern Guyana, found growing in dense forest on red sandy clay and named for a plant collector who worked in the region. Perhaps the most striking Smithsonian finding of the year concerned the humble grapevine: researchers described Rojovitis<\/em>, a new subgenus of Vitis<\/em> \u2014 the genus that includes the world’s cultivated grapes \u2014 built around two newly identified, threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems dotted with prominent pores. It marked only the third recognized subgenus of Vitis<\/em> in nearly a century, a small but genuinely significant recalibration of the family tree behind one of the world’s most economically important crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not all of 2025’s discoveries required a expedition into deep wilderness. In Big Bend National Park in Texas, a volunteer botanist named Deb Manley was walking a remote stretch of desert when she noticed small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers sprouting between the rocks \u2014 something she had never seen before, despite the park’s long history of botanical survey. She photographed it and uploaded the images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, setting off a chain of expert identification that led, eventually, to the description of an entirely new genus, nicknamed the “wooly devil” \u2014 the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And in Hawaii, discovery took a distinctly twenty-first-century turn. Researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian, and a robotics firm used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach a cliff face on the island of Kauai that had proven physically inaccessible to human botanists. The drone returned with samples of a previously unknown plant in the carnation family, since named Schiedea waiahuluensis<\/em> \u2014 one of three dozen Schiedea<\/em> species native to Hawaii, a dozen of which exist only on Kauai. Scientists believe it may be the first new plant species ever discovered by drone, and the mission also yielded an unidentified insect that researchers are still investigating as a possible new species in its own right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Taken together, these discoveries tell two stories at once. The first is a story of persistence and, occasionally, luck: a rediscovered rafflesia in Sumatra, a two-decade wait for a cactus to bloom, a chance photograph from a national park volunteer, a robotic arm reaching where no hand could. The second story is more sobering. Many of the plants botanists are finding for the first time are already, by the moment of their naming, among the rarest organisms on Earth \u2014 restricted to a single mountain range, a single stretch of sand dune, a single cliff face \u2014 and often already under threat from logging, land conversion, or habitat loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is precisely why the work matters so much to conservationists. As botanists at both the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian have long argued, naming a species is not merely an academic exercise \u2014 it is the necessary first step before any legal protection, funding, or conservation plan can exist at all. A plant without a name is, in practical terms, a plant without a defense. Only once Rafflesia hasseltii<\/em> was confirmed alive and blooming in Sumpur Kudus could researchers begin arguing, with data in hand, for stronger protections in a forest where most of the species’ known populations still sit outside any protected boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many already declining toward extinction before they are ever formally recognized \u2014 a phenomenon researchers sometimes call “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species, then, is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises.
