Some of the planet’s most extraordinary flowers are also its rarest. A few survive as no more than a handful of cultivated specimens in botanical gardens; others cling to a single hillside, cave mouth, or riverbank somewhere on Earth. This guide profiles the flowers scientists and conservationists consider among the most endangered in the world — what makes them remarkable, why they’re disappearing, and what’s being done to save them.
How “Endangered” Is Measured
Before diving into individual species, it helps to know the scale being used. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List ranks plants along a spectrum: Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, and Extinct. The IUCN currently lists thousands of plant species as critically endangered, and a large share of those are additionally tagged “possibly extinct” — meaning no confirmed wild sighting in years or decades.
It’s worth noting the data gap that runs through all of this: a huge proportion of the world’s flowering plants have never been formally assessed at all, so the “most endangered” list below is really a list of the flowers we happen to know enough about to worry about.
1. Middlemist’s Red (Camellia japonica ‘Middlemist’s Red’)
Status: Extinct in the wild; believed to survive as only two cultivated specimens on Earth
Often cited as the rarest flower in the world, this vivid pink-red camellia has a strange history. Brought from China to England in 1804 by nurseryman John Middlemist, it has since vanished from its native range entirely. Today, the only two known living specimens grow in a conservatory at Chiswick House in London and in a private garden in New Zealand. Every bloom that opens on either plant is, in effect, one of the last of its kind anywhere.
Why it matters: Middlemist’s Red is a stark illustration of how a flower can outlive its own habitat — surviving purely because gardeners, centuries ago, happened to move a cutting somewhere else.
2. Rafflesia (Rafflesia arnoldii and relatives)
Status: Most of the 42 known Rafflesia species are threatened; 25 are critically endangered, 15 endangered, and 2 vulnerable
Rafflesia produces the largest single flower on Earth — some blooms exceed a meter across — and is infamous for smelling like rotting flesh to attract carrion flies as pollinators. It’s also entirely parasitic, living inside the tissue of a host vine and only revealing itself when it flowers, making it almost impossible to cultivate or protect through conventional means.
A comprehensive international assessment found the genus is in worse shape than previously understood, driven by habitat destruction and illegal harvesting fueled by demand for its supposed medicinal properties. Roughly two-thirds of known Rafflesia populations sit outside any protected area, leaving most of the genus with no formal conservation safety net at all.
Why it matters: Because Rafflesia cannot be grown in cultivation or seed banks the way most plants can, protecting it means protecting the exact patch of forest and the exact host vine it depends on — there is no backup plan.
3. Ghost Orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii and Epipogium aphyllum)
Status: Critically Endangered
Two very different plants share the “ghost orchid” name. Dendrophylax lindenii, found in Florida and Cuba, has no leaves at all — its pale, luminous flowers appear to float on nearly invisible aerial roots. Epipogium aphyllum, found in parts of Europe and Asia, takes ghostliness even further: it contains no chlorophyll, cannot photosynthesize, and survives entirely by parasitizing underground fungi, sometimes going years between above-ground appearances.
Why it matters: Ghost orchids depend on hyper-specific fungal partners and, in Florida’s case, a single moth species for pollination — a chain so fragile that disrupting any one link can silence a population for good.
4. Blue Amaryllis (Worsleya procera)
Status: Critically Endangered, possibly extinct in the wild
This striking blue-lavender amaryllis relative grows wild only on steep, exposed granite cliffs near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — a habitat so specific that a single wildfire can undo decades of survival. A major fire in 2008 destroyed a significant portion of the remaining wild population. Horticulturists at Kew Gardens have successfully propagated the species and preserved its seed in cold storage, offering something of an insurance policy against total loss.

Status: Not recorded in the wild since 1955
This small, snow-white-flowered succulent is endemic to southern Madagascar and has not been confirmed in its natural habitat in around seven decades. It survives today only because botanic gardens around the world have kept it in cultivation, sharing specimens to maintain genetic diversity in the absence of any known wild population.
Why it matters: Aloe albiflora is effectively a species being kept alive by human hands alone — a preview of what may await many more plants as wild habitat continues to shrink.
6. Taiwan Rhododendron (Rhododendron kanehirai)
Status: Extinct in the wild
Once found along the Peishi River in the mountains of northern Taiwan, this crimson, funnel-flowered shrub disappeared from its native habitat after severe flooding. For years, only two individual plants were known to survive anywhere, both growing at Logan Botanic Garden in Scotland. Cuttings have since been distributed to other botanic gardens, including Kew, in hopes of eventually reintroducing the species.
Why it matters: It’s one of the starkest examples on this list of a species reduced to a literal handful of individuals — and rescued only through deliberate, sustained horticultural intervention.
7. Cayman Sage (Salvia caymanensis)

Native only to Grand Cayman, this perennial in the sage family was believed completely extinct for 40 years, between 1967 and 2007, until it was rediscovered following a public campaign that offered a reward for anyone who could locate it in the wild.
Why it matters: Cayman sage’s rediscovery is a reminder that “extinct” and “critically endangered” labels aren’t always final — but also that finding a lost species again is often a matter of luck as much as effort.
8. Parrot’s Beak (Lotus berthelotii)
Status: Endangered, possibly extinct in the wild
Native to the Canary Islands, parrot’s beak produces dramatic, curved crimson-orange flowers that resemble a bird’s beak in silhouette. Once relatively common, its wild population is thought to have collapsed due to habitat loss and the disappearance of its original pollinators — likely a native sunbird species that is itself now extinct or extirpated from the islands.
Why it matters: Parrot’s beak is widely sold as an ornamental plant, which creates a curious paradox: it’s common in garden centers worldwide, while functionally absent from the wild landscape it evolved in.
9. Slipper Orchids (Paphiopedilum spp.)
Status: The majority of species are Endangered or Critically Endangered; roughly 79% of all slipper orchids are threatened
This large genus of pouch-lipped orchids, native across tropical and subtropical Asia, is arguably the single most trafficked group of endangered flowers on Earth. Because collectors prize rare individual species highly, newly discovered slipper orchids have in some cases been stripped from the wild within months of being scientifically described — before conservation protections could even be put in place.
Why it matters: Slipper orchids demonstrate how desirability itself can be an extinction risk. Every species in the genus is listed under CITES Appendix I, the strictest international trade protection available, and enforcement still struggles to keep pace with demand.
10. Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum)
Status: Endangered
Native to the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, the corpse flower produces one of the largest unbranched flower clusters in the plant kingdom and blooms only once every several years, releasing an odor compared to rotting flesh to attract carrion beetles. Deforestation across Sumatra has steadily eroded its native range, and its irregular, infrequent blooming cycle makes wild population recovery especially slow.
Why it matters: Corpse flowers have become minor celebrities when they bloom in botanical gardens, drawing crowds and headlines — a rare case where an endangered flower’s fame in captivity may be helping fund and popularize its conservation in the wild.

- Narrow geographic ranges. Most of these species are endemic to a single island, mountain range, or watershed, leaving no fallback population elsewhere if that specific habitat is damaged.
