Flower Travel Guide to Holland

A Journey Through the Blossoming Heart of the Netherlands

Few places on Earth burst into color quite like the Netherlands in spring. From endless tulip fields that ripple like rainbows across the countryside to historic flower markets and world-renowned gardens, Holland is a dream destination for anyone who loves nature and beauty.

When to Visit

Best time: Mid-March to mid-May

  • Tulip season peaks in mid-April, but crocuses, daffodils, and hyacinths begin blooming as early as March.
  • Summer (June to August) offers vibrant dahlias, roses, and lavender fields, while autumn brings ornamental grasses and late dahlias.

Must-See Flower Destinations

1. Keukenhof Gardens – The Garden of Europe

Location: Lisse
Known as the “Garden of Europe,” Keukenhof is the largest flower garden in the world, showcasing more than seven million blooms each year. The 32-hectare park features artistic floral displays, ponds, and pavilions highlighting Dutch horticultural mastery. Arrive early to enjoy the gardens before the crowds and take a bike ride through the surrounding tulip fields.

2. The Bollenstreek – The Flower Bulb Region

Location: Between Haarlem and Leiden
This region is home to the classic postcard image of Holland: sweeping fields of tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils arranged in vivid stripes of color. Rent a bicycle and follow the Flower Route (Bloemenroute), or drive along the scenic N208 for breathtaking views.

3. Aalsmeer Flower Auction

Location: Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam
The Royal FloraHolland Auction in Aalsmeer is the largest flower auction in the world. Visitors can watch millions of flowers traded daily from an observation gallery. Arrive before 9 a.m. to witness the full bustle of the international flower market in action.

4. Amsterdam’s Floating Flower Market

Location: Singel Canal, Amsterdam
The Bloemenmarkt is the world’s only floating flower market. Here you can browse tulip bulbs, bouquets, and souvenirs while enjoying the charm of Amsterdam’s canals. Though smaller than in the past, it remains a must-see for travelers exploring the city.

5. Noordoostpolder Tulip Fields

Location: Flevoland Province
This lesser-known area offers a quieter, more local experience of tulip season. Every spring, the Tulip Festival (Tulpenroute) features scenic cycling and walking routes through miles of colorful fields.

Suggested Itinerary (4 Days)

Day 1: Arrive in Amsterdam, visit the Bloemenmarkt, and enjoy a canal cruise.
Day 2: Take a day trip to Keukenhof Gardens and explore Lisse’s countryside by bike.
Day 3: Visit Haarlem and drive through the Bollenstreek.
Day 4: Head to Aalsmeer for the flower auction before departing.

Travel Tips

  • Transportation: The Netherlands has excellent cycling routes and public transport. Trains and buses easily connect Amsterdam to major flower regions.
  • Accommodation: Book early for spring travel; many hotels near Keukenhof and Haarlem fill quickly.
  • Photography: Early mornings and late afternoons provide the best light for capturing the vibrant colors.
  • Respect the fields: Always stay on paths—stepping into flower rows can damage bulbs and roots.

Beyond the Tulips

Holland’s flower culture extends year-round through flower festivals, botanical gardens, and even art. Visit The Hague’s Japanese Garden, Utrecht’s Botanical Gardens, or attend the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek, a grand parade of flower-covered floats held every April.
