Flower-based dyes have colored textiles, food, cosmetics, and art across cultures for thousands of years. Long before synthetic dyes existed, communities worldwide cultivated specific flowers purely for their pigment properties. Here’s a regional breakdown of where these dye traditions are strongest and how each flower is used.
South Asia
India has one of the world’s richest flower dye traditions. Marigolds are grown extensively for yellow and orange dyes used in textiles, particularly in Rajasthan and Gujarat, where they color cotton and silk saris. Palash (Butea monosperma), known as the “flame of the forest,” produces the traditional orange-red dye used in Holi celebrations and textile work. Safflower is also cultivated for both its red dye (used in traditional Indian textiles) and as a saffron substitute.
Nepal grows marigolds and rhododendron blossoms, both used in traditional wool-dyeing for handwoven textiles in the Himalayan region.
East Asia
Japan has a long tradition of using safflower (beni-bana) for dyeing, producing the vivid red used in traditional kimono textiles and cosmetics, particularly historic lip rouge. Safflower cultivation is concentrated in Yamagata Prefecture, considered the historical center of Japanese safflower dye production.
China cultivates safflower and gardenia flowers for dye purposes. France has a strong historical connection to weld (Reseda luteola), a flowering plant cultivated for centuries as one of Europe’s primary sources of yellow dye, used in tapestries and fabric before the rise of synthetic dyes. Woad, while primarily grown for its leaves rather than flowers, was cultivated alongside weld in dye gardens, particularly in regions like Normandy and Picardy.
United Kingdom has seen a revival of natural dye gardens growing weld, dyer’s chamomile, and coreopsis, largely driven by the modern slow-fashion and natural textile movement. Historic dye gardens in England once relied heavily on weld for yellow tones in wool dyeing.
Germany and the Netherlands historically cultivated weld and dyer’s broom (Genista tinctoria) for yellow dyes used in wool and linen textiles, particularly during the medieval and early modern periods.

Peru and other Andean countries cultivate a variety of native flowers alongside cochineal (an insect-based dye) in their textile traditions; certain native flowering plants are used for yellow and green dye tones in traditional Andean weaving, particularly in indigenous communities in the highlands.
United States has a small but growing network of natural dye farms, particularly in states like Vermont, Oregon, and North Carolina, cultivating marigolds, coreopsis, and dyer’s chamomile for the artisanal textile and slow-fashion market.
Guatemala grows marigolds and other native flowering plants used in traditional Mayan textile dyeing, often alongside indigo and cochineal in regional weaving cooperatives.
Africa
Nigeria and other parts of West Africa use hibiscus in some traditional dyeing practices, particularly for coloring fabric and leather in earthy red tones, though indigo remains the dominant dye plant in the region.

- Fresh vs. dried flowers behave differently. Some dye plants, like safflower, require specific processing (soaking, fermenting, or separating pigment components) to extract usable color, and dried flowers often yield different tones than fresh ones.
- Many dye flowers are being revived today. The rise of the slow-fashion and natural-dye movement has brought renewed commercial interest to plants like weld, coreopsis, and marigold, which had declined in cultivation after the 19th-century shift to synthetic dyes.
- Not all flower dyes are colorfast. Many natural flower dyes fade faster than synthetic alternatives or require specific fixing techniques to maintain vibrancy over time.
